This photograph is a portrait of General Guadalupe Vallejo. General Vallejo was a military commander, politician, and rancher. Born in Monterey, California, Vallejo entered the military in January, 1824 at the age of seventeen. By the time he reached age 33, he earned the rank of lieutenant-colonel of cavalry. Vallejo was a member of the California’s constitutional convention and applied himself to the work of creating a state with energy and diligence.
