Unforgettable Change: 1960s: People’s Park Fights UC Land Use Policy; One Dead, Thousands Tear Gassed
This is a photograph of people protesting the government’s use of force in the conflict over the People’s Park in Berkeley, California in May, 1969. Local merchants and residents created a park in a space owned by the University of California, Berkeley. The state government, in a show of force, sent in the National Guard to prevent the merchants and residents from creating a neighborhood park on land owned by the University of California.
