This image shows Mrs. Fremont sitting on the porch of the family home in Mariposa, California. Mrs. Fremont was instrumental in her husband's career. First, her father, Senator Benton, secured much of the government support Fremont needed for his expeditions. Secondly, she helped write many of Fremont's accounts of the West, securing his legacy as an important western figure.
