Early California: pre-1769–1840s: Missions
Mission Santa Inez. 1938. Manuel Rivera Regaldo, artist. Watercolor. Collection of Oakland Museum of California.
This image depicts the Mission of Santa Inez. In the background a fire rages while soldiers on horseback ride in the foreground. In February 1824, the Chumash people of the Santa Barbara area revolted against the soldiers within the mission and set fire to several buildings. After several months of resistance and the deaths of 14 Chumash, the revolt was defeated.
