Depression Era: 1930s: “Bloody Thursday” & Other Labor Strikes
This photograph shows the San Francisco Embarcadero on July 4, 1934 as two mounted police officers escort a rioter to jail. The rioter, a longshoreman, attempted to prevent trucks full of cargo to leave the Embarcadero. The longshoremen were striking for better wages, shorter work hours, and for the right to unionize.
